I thought that the film, RIP Remix, was very interesting. I did not know very much about copyright laws before watching this film so it also greatly expanded my knowledge on that. One aspect of the film that I found particularly interesting was fair use. The film included some of Girl Talks remixes and those were breaking copyright laws but it was okay for a certain amount of those songs to be included in the film because of fair use laws. Fair use is, “any copying of copyrighted material done for a limited and “transformative” purpose, such as to comment upon, criticize, or parody a copyrighted work… a defense against a claim of copyright infringement. If your use qualifies as a fair use, then it would not be considered an illegal infringement.” [http://fairuse.stanford.edu/overview/fair-use/what-is-fair-use/]. So pretty much, fair use is the use of copyrighted material that serves a purpose to inform people or show someone it but only so much of it can be used before it is illegal and no longer serves a purpose. For example, if you are doing a music review you can quote a few lines of singer/songwriter Bob Dylan. Fair use is controversial and difficult to define because there is no strict number saying how much is legal and how much use of copyrighted material is illegal. This is because the people who created fair use laws did not want to make any limitations to its definition. That is why in different court cases there has been varying decisions.
