As of 2010, News Corporation, Time Warner, Disney, Viacom, CBS and GE are six huge companies that owned 90 percent of the media we listen to, read and watch. Surprisingly Netflix is a privately owned company. In 1997 Netflix was founded by Reed Hastings and his fellow software executive Marc Randolph as a movie rental company. It later expanded to direct streaming through the Internet, becoming available on computers and other internet devices such as Wii, Xboxes and numerous Apple products. It is now available in over 50 countries around the world today and has over 57 million subscribers. It is affordable with an abundant amount of options, television series and movies, new and old.
I first had Netflix when it was solely mailing DVD’s to homes and was not yet available through Internet providers and devices. I do not remember how old I was when we had it but I remember my mother ended up cancelling our subscription because we were not really using it that much and it was not very convenient to mail the disks back and forth. A few years later when we were able to get Netflix to stream directly on our television through the Wii we purchased Netflix again and have had it since. Now I watch Netflix on my laptop, on my iPhone, through my Wii on the television at home, and through my Sony internet television in my dorm room. The streaming options are almost endless. The convenience of Netflix has caused it to be extremely successful.
As successful as Netflix is it has not made nearly as much profit as I would have expected. In October of 2012 at the end of the third quarter Netflix reported an 88 percent decline in third quarter profits. However, in the fourth quarter of that same year revenue raised 8 percent to $945 million. In 2014 Netflix decided on a risky move to raise the most popular package option $1 in order to pay more to license content from television studios and television networks. For the future Netflix plans to become more accessible in more countries.
I think that it is a good thing that Netflix is privately owned. I think that Netflix would probably make more money if they were not but I do not know for sure. Since Netflix is privately owned I know that the money I pay each month is going to Netflix and not to other companies. I think that being privately owned is a good thing for me and for Netflix because they do not have to take orders from a larger corporation about what they allow customers to view. If Netflix was owned by one of the larger corporations maybe some of the content that is on Netflix now would no longer be available to the subscribers.
