One of the stories discussed in the Page One Documentary was the NBC Universal merger with Comcast. Comcast, as most people know, is a cable, internet, and telephone provider. The Page One Documentary was filmed in 2011 and Comcast completed its acquisition of NBC Universal on March 19, 2013. Comcast wanted to buy NBC because people today watch most of their television on the internet or on internet sites like Netflix and Hulu. This means that people are no longer wanting to purchase cable anymore and that is obviously bad for Comcast. They also wanted to buy NBC so that they could, “…stifle competition in online video by restricting where NBC-owned content can be offered, and charge higher rates to television providers for accessing NBC-owned networks; having to pass these charges on to consumers.” [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Acquisition_of_NBC_Universal_by_Comcast] Comcast is coming up with new programs and ways to make up the money they are losing from people no longer purchasing cable. One way is forcing customers to purchase packages including all three: internet, television, and telephone. Another new program that has been put into place is data caps. Comcast will now no longer let you have unlimited access to the internet you purchase from them. “According to a page on Comcast’s website outlining the program, customers are notified when they’ve gone over their data allotment during a billing period, and they’re given “three courtesy months” during which they can go over their data usage plans without being penalized. After that, they’re charged $10 for each additional package of 50 gigabytes. This type of plan could get expensive very quickly for people who stream a lot, or who plan to get their TV from a streaming service instead of a traditional pay TV provider.” [http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2015/03/26/cable-companies-cutting-cord_n_6940414.html] This is just one example of how companies are changing in order to remain successful while new technologies are becoming more popular.
